Club History

The CSU Men’s Rugby Club was founded by Dave Freedman and Mike Wray in 1970, marking the inception of a journey filled with resilience and achievement. With just 17 players initially and little knowledge of the sport, the club faced numerous challenges, including a limited budget and scarcity of equipment. However, these early setbacks did not deter their determination. Over the years, the club steadily expanded its membership, developed its skills, and embarked on a path of continuous improvement. This commitment bore fruit when they secured the Colorado Rugby Championship in the Fall of 1971, a remarkable “rags to riches” story that earned them national recognition. The club’s legacy is further enhanced by the accomplishments of its alumni, who went on to represent the USA Eagles Men’s National Team and achieved success at various levels of the sport, contributing to a rich and enduring history.
